Falwell Apologizes

September 16th, 2001

Jerry Falwell apologized for implying that gays and lesbians were the cause of Tuesday’s attack. He said that blame lies solely with the terrorists. But, he also said that perhaps, as indicated in the Bible, God’s protection has been lifted from America because of the “secularization”. In the same article, Robertson is quoted as saying that the Supreme Court took away the Bible from school children.

September 14th, 2001

For the time being, I’ve got a bunch of other projects going. Typically, I do a bunch of writing on the bus to and from work. For now, I’ll probably be doing more reading on the bus. I’ll continue to post links, thoughts and (with a little less regularity) Features.

Falwell Nonsense

September 14th, 2001

The Washington Post has an article about Jerry Falwell’s comments concerning Tuesday. Falwell said that the US got what it deserved because of liberals, gays, abortionists, etc. He also said, “When a nation deserts God and expels God from the culture . . . the result is not good.” Wrong. America hasn’t deserted God. I know plenty of Americans that are big fans of God (and of being good, kind human beings).

21st Century War

September 13th, 2001

Jon Carrol Welcome to the 21st Century: “There will be pressure to suspend our freedoms, to allow the government to invade our privacy and control our speech as part of the glossy new war. If terrorists force America to give up its freedoms, then they will have won.” Good article. He also talks about how in this war, we don’t know who we’re fighting.

Maintaining Balance

September 13th, 2001

There is an article about American Muslims going on the defensive. I do hope that people maintain perspective through this. Someone on CNN made the point that “there are 1 billion Muslims in the world, and we’re not at war with them”. There is a small radical faction that we need to be concerned about, and we should think no differently of our Muslim and Arab friends today than we did at the beginning of the week.

John Perry Barlow Message

September 12th, 2001

In the link to Dave’s site below, you’ll see a quote from a message posted by John Perry Barlow likening the events of 9/11 to the Nazi takeover of the German government. “Within a few hours, we will see beginning the most vigorous efforts to end what remains of freedom in America. Those of who are willing to sacrifice a little - largely illusory - safety in order to maintain our faith in the original ideals of America will have to fight for those ideals just as vigorously.”

The View of Terror from the Next Day

September 12th, 2001

Yesterday’s terrorist attacks were a huge atrocity. My heartfelt condolences to everyone who lost a loved one, and my wishes for a speedy recovery to everyone who was injured. I pray that US retaliation is done with proper forethought to ensure that the correct perpetrators are identified.
Dave Winer provided good coverage of the events, with a variety of views.

Why the SSSCA must be stopped

September 11th, 2001

Do you want to pay more and get less?

ObDisclaimer: I have not read the text of the SSSCA and am going on the basis of the articles posted about it.
The SSSCA, in a nutshell, aims to ensure that copy protection devices are built-in to all sorts of products that can work with digital media. These devices need to be certified by the Department of Commerce, and any attempts to remove or disable them would be a violation of the law.
