by Kevin Dangoor

Why Net searches for jobs are so popularWharton looks at the ways that employers and recruiters can tap the best talent during tight economic times. [CNet] – This is one reason I’m at CareerSite. There is still a tremendous amount of untapped potential in online employment services.

Giuliani is Time’s Person of the Year

by Kevin Dangoor

Rudy Giuliani was definitely a figure that emerged from the chaos of 911 to show himself to be the kind of leader one wants during crisis. Time has named him Person of the Year for 2001.

Fellowship of the Ring was excellent

by Kevin Dangoor

We saw Fellowship of the Ring on Thursday night. One warning: a 10:15 showing finished up at 1:30, so be prepared. I’ll leave my commentary on it short, simple and spoiler free: it was an excellent movie. If you’re at all into fantasy, this is as good as it gets. Expect nominations for Best Picture and Best Director Oscars (in addition to the expected Best Visual Effects).

Office move

by Kevin Dangoor

Yesterday was CareerSite’s office move, so I missed out on a day of blogging. The move was a lot of work (I’m still a little sore), even with 6 professional movers and 3 trucks (moving only two blocks!). The new building is very nice. I’ll probably be offline on Monday as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m back up by Wednesday though.

Can Fellowship Best Harry Potter?

by Kevin Dangoor

Entertainment Weekly asks if Fellowship of the Ring can beat Harry Potter’s box office. Since Potter will take in $300 million, there’s no certainty that FOTR can beat that. Fantasy is not box office poison.

IBM Factors 15 to 3 and 5

by Kevin Dangoor

IBM takes quantum leapBig Blue researchers say they have used a newly developed computer to perform ‘the most complex quantum computation to date.’ It’s a step forward. [ZDNet] It’s funny that the most complex quantum computation was factoring 15 into 3 and 5, but you’ve got to start somewhere. It’s actually a bit frightening that they’re using factoring as their test case for these computers, because that means that the first large scale quantum computer they make will be able to break all encryption in use today.

One Ring to Rule the Dome

by Kevin Dangoor

The MIT Great Dome was hacked to include The One Ring. The text running around the ring is Elvish and is the same inscription that’s in the Lord of the Rings.

Musicians Set Up Anti-RIAA Concerts

by Kevin Dangoor

The Sacramento Bee has an article about musicians raising money to battle the record companies. Some big names are set to perform: Elton John, No Doubt, The Eagles, Sheryl Crow, Dixie Chicks, Stevie Nicks. Dexter Holland of The Offspring said “It’s about time for artists to take control of their work and how it is presented to our fans”. Very good.
