Weed: file-sharing and multi-level marketing
by Kevin Dangoor
Slashdot is reporting that Sir Mix-A-Lot is using Weed to distribute music. Weed is a rather nifty sounding DRM/file-sharing combo that lets you preview music. If you buy it and share it, you get a cut of the sales of your shared music. While I find DRM generally annoying, at least here is someone trying to do something truly innovative with it.
Couldn’t agree more, tazzzzz…
Weed doesn’t use any more DRM than Apple’s iTunes, though, and for the first time in the history of recorded sound, fans get *paid* every time a song is bought. Plus, the artist always gets 50%.
The Phenomenon aka Weed is snowballing like crazy – new artists and new listeners are leaping into the fray every day. Feel free to listen to some of mine at http://www.thisischichi.com/audio.htm
Remember, you get *three* free listens to every song. After you’ve bought the song (typically for $1), you can burn it to CD or transfer it to a portable device. Makes sense as you now own it. The best bit is that you now get a cut every time someone buys the song on your recommendation, for up to 2 generations of listeners.
The whole thing is designed to *encourage* filesharing; people buy songs they like and then post them on their sites and earn commission for sharing new music.
WeedShare.com provides all new Weed accounts with $5 to kick off proceedings. Once you’ve spent that, you’ll need a PayPal account to top up.
The future of file sharing has arrived.
