Super Volcanoes update: Yellowstone not likely to explode

April 28th, 2004

An ever popular BSOM posting was about Super Volcanoes, and the possibility of Yellowstone erupting and eradicating life as we know it. New research apparently concludes that massive eruptions are rare, and Yellowstone does not appear to be gearing up for one. So, you can officially quit worrying about super volcanoes and go back to worrying about sudden climate change.

Hate to tell you this Taz, but the ground level of the caldera at Yellowstone has risen about 74cm in less than 100 years, quite a bit for the time scale of the planet. Also, it’s been calculated to be about 40,000 years over due for its next eruption. (hopefully it doesn’t check its watch too soon)

I don’t think it likely that anyone in the developed world would be happy about the results if Yellowstone exploded. Where will all of the foreign aid come from? Who’s going to buy those fancy products made elsewhere?
