$5 charge to reduce labor?

The Direct Marketing Association provides a way to get off of many mailing lists all in one go. It’s free if you register by mail. It costs $5 to register online. How much sense does that make? Clearly, registering online is going to save them time rekeying and verifying information. Goofy.
I did notice that when you fill out the form to mail in, they assign a tracking number… so at least they’ve got it set up so they only need to rekey the tracking number.
Oh, that’s an easy one to figure out. Most people are too lazy to send a piece of paper with actual handwriting on it to potentially have something done sometime in the future. And it is really hard to bill ‘em for the service anyway.
With a web page, it is too easy to do so you have to discourage people from using it by charging money. And it is so painlessly easy to charge money, that you might as well do so just in case you generate some bonus revenue.
