Great meeting at TechSmith (Camtasia)

March 17th, 2006

Yesterday, I had an excellent time meeting with folks at TechSmith. You may remember that a few weeks ago, I urged people to pester TechSmith about a Mac version of their wonderful Camtasia product. A few emails with Troy Stein, the Camtasia product manager, later and I was off to meet with them to discuss a wide variety of things going on at TechSmith.

TechSmith is one of those software companies that makes great products and really cares about their users. That’s probably a big part of how they’ve been in business 18 years (and they’re still growing quite nicely, from what I saw). As much as it sometimes seems like all of the interesting action is happening in California, there are quite a few high-tech gems scattered about everywhere. TechSmith is in Okemos, Michigan.

By the way, if you live near Okemos/Lansing (or would like to) TechSmith is hiring (a lot!). They’re hiring all kinds of people and there’s likely room for software developers of many different backgrounds. Check them out!

(And I’m still working on convincing them about that whole Camtasia for the Mac thing :)

I would really love Camtasia for Mac. Imho it’s one of the few applications that’s missing on OSX and it leaves a great void. SnapzPro only brings you so far.

I would also LOVE to see Camtasia for OS X.
Like Geert points out, there is a real need for a nice screen recording software that is web-friendly.

Anyway, as screen-casting gets more popular the need for Camtasia alike software will increase. I remember a post from the Rails lead developer David Heinemeier Hansson where he states that he would love to see Camtasia for Mac:

I recently contacted TechSmith. This is the response I received. (This was also before I found this thread).

“At this time there is nothing set in stone. All I can say is to keep on the lookout for some future products being released in the coming months.

    Kind Regards,
    AJ
    TechSmith Support”

That’s better than a flat out, “Go away, adn quite bugging us!” response.

That would be, “Go away, and quit bugging us!
