First half of TG book available electronically

October 5th, 2006

At long last, the first half of Rapid Web Applications with TurboGears is now available electronically as part of “Rough Cuts”. You can buy it electronically now and keep getting updates all the way through the final copy of the book. The book is entirely in the editing phase right now and we’re working hard to wrap it all up quickly. We’re expecting the entire book to be on Safari by the end of the month, and it should be available in print next month.

I’m not understanding how Rough Cuts works. Reading their FAQ, it says this: “Electronic Access: Purchase the online, pre-publication version of a Rough Cuts title. You can read the Rough Cuts book online, download it in PDF format, or print it. Rough Cuts titles are available for reading until 45 days after the print version is published. Once the title is officially in print, you can make one additional download of the complete book. When you buy a Rough Cuts title through this option, your credit card is charged immediately.”

That makes it sound like the book will self-destruct in 45 days after the publishing date. I’ve bought books from Manning (like the title wxPython in Action) in pdf form, but they don’t have this self-destruct misfeature. Am I misunderstanding O’Reilly’s explanation, or are they really saying the book self-destructs 45 days after the paper edition comes out?

Sorry, Prentice Hall. I saw the Safari branding and assumed I was on O’Reilly’s website.

I believe that wording is just unclear. You can read Rough Cuts titles online at the Safari website, and I think it’s *that* feature that goes away after 45 days. As I understand it, the download is a standard PDF file that you can keep forever.
