Google Tech Talk for the next MichiPUG meeting

by Kevin Dangoor

The August MichiPUG meeting will be held at the Google Ann Arbor office. We’re having a joint meeting with the Ann Arbor Computer Society: Google Ann Arbor Tech Talk Event.

The meeting is at the normal MichiPUG time (presentation starts at 7PM on Thursday, August 2nd). However, there’s going to be food, drinks and chatting with area tech folks and Google folks starting at 6PM. We’re looking forward to an excellent gathering. Space is limited so be sure to RSVP.

TechSmith (Camtasia maker) goes Mac!

by Kevin Dangoor

One of my most enduringly popular blog entries is the one in which I call out for a Mac version of Camtasia, TechSmith’s exceedingly cool screencasting tool. If you search Google for “camtasia mac”, that posting is the top link. Troy Stein, Camtasia’s product manager, has been active in the conversation in the comments on that entry, and today clued me in to Jing Project: Visual conversation starts here. Mac or Windows.

Jing is an integrated screen capture and sharing tool and marks the first major foray in the Mac software for TechSmith that I’m aware of (they do have a Mac version of their codec, but that’s not the same as an actual app!). You’re limited to making 5 minute Flash movies (likely using TechSmith’s awesome lossless codec), but Jing is free and many screencasts are 5 minutes or less anyhow.

Of course, I still want to see Camtasia for the Mac, because of its great editing tools. But, it’s great to see TechSmith heading into the Mac market!

Bye bye, CareerSite

by Kevin Dangoor

A few days ago, a bunch of present and former CareerSite employees got together in a farewell gathering for the company. The Ann Arbor News has a brief story: CareerSite moving out of state. I was the application development manager at CareerSite from late 2001 through Feb 2003. That was an, um, interesting time.

Lots of motion in TurboGears now

by Kevin Dangoor

Alberto Valverde, TurboGears’ current fearless leader, made an announcement a few days back about some changes that have quickened TG’s pace of development: Update on the status of TG. Open source projects can take a considerable amount of time and energy that can be hard to sustain, depending on what is going on in your life. I certainly saw that with various contributors to TurboGears. People would come and go as they needed to.

Alberto detected that he needed more help to push through with all of the new developments in the project and he has it in the form of three dedicated folks. Florent Aide will maintain TurboGears 1.x and has done a lot of work bringing patches in and getting things ready for release. Mark Ramm is leading the TurboGears 2 charge, which is some very exciting development. And Chris Arndt has stepped up as the new sysadmin for the TurboGears.org websites, a place where we really needed some help.

These three positions are, of course, in addition to all of the folks who contribute code, docs and discussion to the project. It’s great to see TurboGears continuing to be so vibrant and interesting as it approaches its second birthday!
