With OmniFocus and 1Password, the whole point for me is that I want to sync my MacBook's data with my iPhone's. As long as I can use an ad hoc network to do so in a pinch, I'm happy (though I don't know if you can use an ad hoc network for that or not). But what are you trying to sync with? I'm travelling right now (to iPhoneDevCamp whee!) and hotel and airport WIFI is generally pathetically useless and/or expensive. And it may or may not be convenient to pull out my Macbook to sync up. By syncing to the "cloud" (haha) I can do it whenever it is convenient, whenever I want via EDGE. I've not found it to be _that_ slow personally (but anything EDGE based isn't speedy).
